VMFS è un file system a cluster progettato per memorizzare dischi di macchine virtuali per host di server VMware ESX o ESXi. Questo insieme di strumenti permette di accedere a tali file system da altri host diversi da ESX/ESXi ad esempio per attività di manutenzione.

Attualmente è disponibile solo l'accesso in lettura, ma l'accesso in scrittura è in lavorazione. Sono gestiti anche extent multipli.

Si può accedere al VMFS con uno strumento a riga di comando o può essere montato tramite un file system in spazio utente (basato su FUSE).
