Bluefish es un potente editor dirigido a programadores y desarrolladores web, con muchas opciones para desarrollar sitios web, scripts y código. Bluefish admite una gran variedad de lenguajes de programación y de marcado y tiene muchas caraterísticas, por ejemplo:

 - Maneja operaciones remotas con ficheros sobre FPT, SFTP, HTTPS, WebDAV, etc.

Aun así continua siendo ligero y rápido.

Para validación de documentos CSS/HTML/XML son necesarios csstidy, tidy, weblint o xmllint. Para que funcione la vista previa es necesario un navegador web que pueda mostrar ficheros locales pasados por la línea de comandos. Para PHP o Python bluefish soporta php-codesniffer y pylint. Herramientas no recomendadas pero admitidas son make, perl, php5-cli y java-compiler.
