Rs læser standardind, fortolker hver linje som en række af mellemrumsadskilte poster i en array, omdanner arrayen jævnfør indstillingerne og skriver til standardud. Utallige indstillinger kontrollerer standardind, omdanner og danner resultatet; den simpleste brug er »ls -1 | rs«, som giver samme resultat (på en 80 tegn bred terminal) som den moderne »ls« uden parameteren »-1«.
