Gztool indekserer gzip-komprimerede filer, så de kan tilgås vilkårligt (i stedet for fra begyndelsen). Programmet kan indeksere eksisterende filer, som bruger lige så meget tid som at udpakke filen helt; kan også pakke og udpakke filer selv, oprette optimerede indeks undervejs.
