Idlestat bruger kernens FTRACE-funktion til at overvåge og optage C-state- og P-state-transitioner over cpu'er igennem et tidsinterval. Programmet beregner i alt, gennemsnit, min. og maks. tider brugt i hver C-state, P-state for hver cpu og hver cpu-klynge. Idlestat rapporterer også tiderne hvor specifikke IRQ'er medførte at cpu'en gik ud af en ledig tilstand, per cpu og per IRQ.
